Questions from The Friday Five
Jul. 29th, 2006 11:30 pmHobbeth introduced me to this one, so you all can blame her! Heh, heh! And I've discovered that this needs to be public, so public it shall be.
1. Are you named after anyone? If so, explain. No, I'm not. My name was just a popular one for the year, I think.
2. Do you have your children's names picked out already? If so, is there any significance? Well, I have kids, and yes, I had names picked out, at least for the boys.
My father-in-law used his first name for his first son's first name, and his middle name for his second son's first name. I thought that was a cool idea, so our first son bears his father's first name, and our second son bears his father's middle name (which, coincidentally, is the name of one of my brothers). We didn't go quite as far as my father-in-law went in one respect: all of his children, when you used their nicknames for first initials, ended up with the initials BJB.
Our first son actually bears both grandfather's names, his paternal grandfather as first, maternal grandfather as middle, while the second one bears a family last name from my side of the family as his middle name.
Our daughter has the first name of a character my husband created for his comic strip, but is known by a nickname that she shares with a fictional heroine (mostly because I didn't want people calling her by another possible shortened version of her name, the one that the character would have been called when she appeared).
Her middle name is a rather convoluted bit of logic on my part. My maiden name is a word in German that my family pronounces as its meaning in English, and not as the general American public does, or as it would be pronounced in German. So my daughter's middle name is a French word that we pronounce by its meaning in English, and not as the French do. Which means it basically gets slaughtered by the general American public... as do both her first name and her nickname.
Sigh. She got the short end of the stick, I fear. A very pretty, unusual name, that very few people know how to pronounce correctly.
And I did have a name picked out for a second daughter, if we had had one: Miranda Lynn. My mother hated it.
3. If you were born a member of the opposite sex what would your name have been? I have no clue. Possibly the name of the oldest of my brothers.
4. If you could re-name yourself what name would you pick and why? I don't think I'd want to rename myself. I like my name as it is, warts and all.
5. Are there any mispronunciations/typos that people do w/ your name constantly? Well, my maiden and married last names are slaughtered and misspelled on a regular basis, the maiden far more than the married. (I still don't understand how people can mispronounce my married name! It's just not that hard!) I got into the habit of pronouncing my maiden name first, then quickly spelling it for people. My middle name is often misspelled as well as there's an extra 'n' in there that most people with that name don't have. A perfectly acceptable spelling, just not what's expected.
